Professor Mills elected Ghana's president
The Electoral Commission (EC), declared on 3 January 2009 Professor John Evans Atta Mills of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the President-elect of the Republic of Ghana.
Professor Mills obtained a total vote of 4,521,032 representing 50.23% of the total votes cast to beat his closest rival, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo - Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who polled a total vote of 4,480,446 representing 49.77% of the total votes cast.
Dr Kwadwo Afari-Djan, chairman of the Electoral Commission made this declaration on 3 January 2009 in a press conference in Accra, after the run-off at the Tain Constituency Brong Ahafo Region, which was the final decider of the 2008 Presidential Election in Ghana.
