He has many years of experience as a senior manager in a number of major corporations, including, Nampak, Namitech, Unilever (Lever Brothers), PetroSA. April qualified as a mechanical engineer and later achieved an MBA ,both through the university of the Witwatersrand. He started his training as an engineer on the gold mines, working for Anglo American.
